(TrueTrendNews.com) – While House Republicans continue their internal feud over the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson, some have expressed suspicion about an ulterior motive behind Democratic support for the controversial leader.
Rep. Johnson, a member of the GOP from Louisiana, was elected to the speakership in October 2023, after the chaotic and historic removal of former Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California. He has since stirred up considerable controversy, most notably for his support of a divisive foreign aid package that provided billions of dollars to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan—with the help of Johnson.
His actions have angered many House Republicans, some of whom have gone so far as to demand the Speaker resign from his leadership position or risk being kicked out like his predecessor. Johnson has stated that he has no intention of abandoning his post despite animosity from his colleagues, spearheaded by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
But not every lawmaker is upset about Johnson’s leadership tactics. On Tuesday April 30, Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who serves as the House Minority Leader, headed a statement from Democratic leaders in the chamber who declared their support of the Speaker. The declaration insisted the Democrats’ intention of blocking Greene from obtaining a vote in the House to remove Johnson.
In response to the public affirmation of the House Speaker, Republicans have expressed suspicion about the Left-wing party supporting the Christian leader, whose promotion was generally well accepted by Republicans.
Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison described the move from Democrats as a potential “psy-op” that could be a hidden effort from the opposite party to ultimately have the Speaker “vacated.” Similarly, Rep. Barry Moore of Alabama said that the move hints at Democrats “trying to push” Greene to force a vote on the motion to vacate, adding that he is not sure this tactic is “the best thing.”
South Carolina Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, both of whom are against removing Johnson, also noted that the Democratic move is “just strange.”
