(TrueTrendNews.org) – Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the president of Palestine has called on the United States to use its influence to stop the attacks being launched at the city of Rafah, on the border of Gaza.
President Mahmoud Abbas made the remarks during a World Economic Forum special meeting held in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Sunday April 28. The meeting comes ahead of an anticipated attack on Rafah that is expected by the president in the coming days. More than a dozen people were already killed in a similar offensive in the same region.
Abbas said that the United States is “the only country” with the ability to “prevent Israel” from attacking the city, which the president described as a “crime.” He added that his country “call[s] on” America to intervene. Airstrikes have been launched at Rafah in recent weeks. However, the Jewish nation has threatened to issue a full-blown attack on the city in an effort to destroy all of Hamas’ bases in the area.
The current tension in the Middle East—which has left Palestinians in the Gaza Strip caught in the crossfire—was sparked by the October 7, 2023, massacre of more than a thousand innocents in Israeli towns by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. In response, the Israeli military forces launched airstrikes into Gaza, killing and displacing thousands more civilians.
Abbas added that it would only take a “small strike” on Rafah to push Palestinians completely out of their homeland. The president described this potential result as the “biggest catastrophe” in Palestine’s history. He also said that he is worried Israel will continue forcing his people out of the region, even further than they have already relocated, into Jordan.
The United States and many other nations have urged Israel to scale back its retaliation, fearing additional civilian casualties and an expansion of the war. Amid peace talks—which have included America and Egypt as key players—Hamas is reportedly considering a proposal to release more hostages in exchange for temporary cease fires in Gaza. Israel, though, has not completely agreed to the terms of the proposal.
