(TrueTrendNews.com) – A Democratic lawmaker has come to the defense of the Republican House Speaker as he faces threats to remove him from his leadership position.
On Sunday April 21, California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna said that Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson “deserves to keep his job” despite considerable backlash from the GOP. Johnson, who assumed his role in October 2023 after former Rep. Kevin McCarthy was kicked out of the position, has been under fire during his short tenure for supporting foreign aid packages and controversial surveillance bills.
Over the weekend, the House of Representatives managed to approve legislation that will provide billions of dollars to foreign allies, including Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The bill package was largely criticized by conservatives, some of whom tried to gather support for American border security measures in exchange for approving the Democrat-backed foreign aid.
While Johnson faces increasing scrutiny for appearing to side with the Left and abandon the GOP, Khanna is one of several Democrats who have expressed support for the Speaker and said they would not endorse his resignation after the aid package was passed. During a recent interview, Khanna commended Johnson for his “civility” in pushing the passage of the bills, for which he said he “give[s] him credit.”
Khanna added that he would “vote to table” all proposals “to vacate” Johnson from his Speaker seat. The congressman also said that he believes more “progressive Democrats” would respond similarly, noting how he “disagree[s]” with Johnson “on many issues” but, since he “did the right thing” in regard to the foreign aid legislation, he still believes he should keep him position “until the end of this term.”
The support from the Democratic lawmaker comes after Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene spearheaded a motion demanding that Johnson resign, or face being kicked out like his predecessor. The motion does not have a vote yet because she has not made it privileged, though Greene warned she might make her threat concrete in the coming days.
